HOW THE TARIFFS STOLE CHRISTMAS

Will we have Christmas this year?

It is estimated that China produces nearly 90% of the world’s Christmas products, which are valued at roughly $4 billion annually. Until recently, over half of these products found a home in the US.

Christmas will surely be celebrated. However, with the current 245 percent “Trump Tariff,” it will probably be enjoyed with far fewer China-made toys and decorations this year. It is anticipated that a number of countries, perhaps led by Japan or Argentina, will align with our “Deal Maker in Chief.” However, the rhetoric between the US and China suggests balancing self-interests may be very challenging and will take some time. From consumer products to consumer staples, supply chains are being rethought.

Organizations that have the ability to be operationally nimble will enjoy a short-term competitive advantage in the fast-changing commercial environment we have entered. For others, far less fireworks this Fourth of July will give us time to ponder the path forward.
